Vertis Oneta Gordon

GORDON, Vertis Oneta passed from this life on June 30, 2012 at the age of 91 in Terrell, Texas. Born in the community of Little Hope in Winnsboro, Texas on July 26, 1920. She was the first born of 6 children to John Austin Meek and Elizabeth McCoy. Vertis spent the first 20 years of her life in Little Hope. She then met the lover of her life, Homer Gordon and they were married on September 9, 1939 in Alba, Texas. They made their home in Emory, Texas for over 20 years where their six children were born. They moved to Dallas, Texas in 1962. After taking time to raise her children she started her career as a nurse. She worked in several nursing homes in the Dallas area for over 20 years. She loved spending time in her garden raising vegetables and flowers. Vertis loved her family and cherished every moment spent with them and it was very evident they loved her in return. Vertis put her faith and hope in her Lord and Savior at an early age and her Lord was always first in her life. She was a faithful and active church member. She loved teaching Sunday school and teaching children about her Lord. She believed in living her life by example so that her children and her Sunday school children could carry on these values and pass them down to their children. After moving to Dallas she joined Newman Park Baptist Church in 1962 and continued teaching Sunday school for the next 40 years. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 46 years, Homer; son, Gene Gordon; great grandchildren, Robert Maldonado, Jonathan Fletcher and Diona Reyes; brothers, Clifford Meek, Paul Meek, Gene Meek and Dick Waldrop; sister, Syble Meek. We know that you are tender and caring, ready to shower us with your mercies that are new every day. Shelter us in the shadow of your wings; teach us the song of hope that comes with your presence. Give us courage to wait, surrounded by your great cloud of witnesses, for the promised resurrection. Through Jesus Christ, who lived and died and lives again. Amen.
