Velia D. Nevarez, age 85, of Garland, Texas passed away February 1, 2024. She succumbed to a chronic lung disease, which she had battled for several years. She was a fighter and never gave up hope. Val was a Christian and believer in Jesus Christ. She had tremendous faith and trust in God.
She was born June 28, 1938, to Dora Elizalde Duenas and Manuel Duenas of Phoenix, Arizona. Her greatest joys in life were her grandchildren, Heath Dunn (42), Heather Nichol (41), Stephanie Nevarez (40), great-grandchildren, Landon Nichol (20), Noah Alvarez (16), Reagin Dunn (16), Camryn Dunn (14), Brody Nichol (12), Bryson Nichol (9). Nevarez, born March 3, 1957 - June 22, 2020, and one daughter, Judie Ann Dunn, born January 15, 1963.
As a young mother and wife, Val worked on the military base as her husband was in the AirForce. Being in the military meant a lot of relocating. While she didn't travel with the kids overseas to England, Germany, and Vietnam, where her husband was stationed; she was still able to travel within the states to Nebraska, Oregon, Arizona, and Minnesota.
Her most fulfilling job was being a mother, and a Nana, as she raised several generations in her home. There was nothing she loved more than spending time with her family. She attended pageants, dance competitions, cheer competitions, baseball, basketball, and football games.
She was on the PTO board at several schools, Girl Scout leader, home room mom for her grandkids, and volunteered in many other areas. Val was a servant leader and did so with grace and passion.
