Sally Maxine Newsom

February 15, 1934 — September 25, 2002

Sally Maxine (Koupal) Newsom, of Garland, Texas, passed away at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas on Wednesday, September 25, 2002.She was born February 15, 1934 to Stephen W. Koupal and Marvel Evelyn (Foster) Koupal in Ronan, Montana. She was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald, and her parents. Mom was born in Montana but spent most of her childhood years growing up in Oregon, with Mt. Hood as nearby scenery. She loved the beauty of Mt. Hood as well as the surrounding areas. She attended schools in Sandy and Parkdale, Oregon. As a little girl, she was quite a handful, according to her mother. She was reportedly ornery to her big sister Pat, but Pat got her back one time while living in Montana, when she put mom on a sled and slid her out into the middle of the road! She once cut the whiskers off one of the farm cats "just to see what would happen".She also dropped a baby chicken in a bucket of water just to see if it would sink or swim! Her childhood wit was still evident even in her last days, when, at the hospital, her sister Pat was reading to her and said "Do you want me to keep reading or just shut up?"Mom said "Shut up." Just after graduation from high school, she went back to northern Montana to work during the tourist seasons at Glacier National Park. When she was 20 years old and working as a telephone operator in Portland, she met and married our father, Robert A. Newsom, who was serving in the U.S. Air Force.Their first years two years were spent in Portland, Oregon, and then they moved to Texas, where she lived the rest of her life. For about 25 years, they lived in Angus, Texas just south of Corsicana, Texas. There, she served two terms as City Mayor and also served on the city council for more than 15 years. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (more commonly known as LDS or Mormon.)She was extremely involved in service for many years in the Relief Society, the church women's society, and served as Relief Society President twice.Another of her favorite things to do was serving in the Dallas LDS Temple once a week. As most all of Mom's friends and family knew, she was an excellent cook.Libby and I will never be able to top her on that! She was just a natural when it came to cooking. She was of Czechoslovakian descent and prided herself on making kolaches, a Czech pastry.Mom also had a great love of music - of all kinds - from Pavarotti to Vince Gill! She even took Libby and me to see Elvis in concert in the early 70's!She enjoyed working at various cattle auction barns throughout central Texas - - Palestine, Angus, Hubbard, Waco, West, Ennis, and Buffalo to name a few.She developed many close friendships with the other women who worked in the auction offices. After her divorce in the early 90's, she moved to Rowlett, Texas and then to nearby Garland, remaining in that area until her death. She was a member of the LDS Church Rowlett 2nd Ward. One of her greatest joys in life was spending time with her grandchildren, whom adored her also, and will miss her greatly. She is survived by three children and their spouses: Julie (Newsom) Hosick and husband Steven Hosick, of Bella Vista, Arkansas Jerry Newsom and wife Kim Newsom, of Angus, Texas Libby (Newsom) Morgan and husband Reese Morgan, of Forney, Texas Grandchildren surviving are: Lauren Morgan of Forney, Texas Lindsey Morgan of Forney, Texas Caleb Morgan of Forney, Texas Madison Morgan of Forney, Texas Clint Morgan of Cape May, New Jersey Mandy Morgan of Arlington, Texas Kristen Haynes of Angus, Texas Matthew Haynes of Angus, Texas Stephen Hosick of Castro Valley, California Maranatha Hosick of Castro Valley, California Great-Grandchildren are: Keely Hosick of Castro Valley, California Macey Mae Hosick of Castro Valley, California Sydney Hosick of Castro Valley, California She is also survived by her sister, Patricia Downard, of St. George, Utah, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and many, many friends.
