Rayburn "Fred" Edwards, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home on August 11, 2024, at the age of 84. Born in Sulphur Springs on March 9, 1940, and raised on a farm in Saltillo, Fred lived a life marked by dedication to his family, faith, and work.
Fred was the son of Welcome and Clara Lee Edwards. He is survived by his older brother, James Edwards, and his sister, Sue Farrell, both of whom were deeply cherished by him throughout his life.
He spent over five decades at Dallas Plumbing and Air Conditioning, where he rose to the position of Vice President. His 53 years of service there were a testament to his strong work ethic, character, and commitment to his profession. Fred was known for his integrity, and those who worked with him admired his unwavering honesty, fairness, and dedication to doing what was right.
Fred married the love of his life, Betty, on December 8, 1973. This year, they joyfully celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Together, they built a life full of love, laughter, and memories.
A devoted father, Fred is survived by his daughter Sharon and his youngest son Billy. He was preceded in death by his son, Stanley Ray Edwards. Fred was also a loving stepfather to James, Barry, and Danny, who he cared for as his own.
His grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him immense joy, and he could often be found on the sidelines, cheering them on as they played sports-a passion he deeply enjoyed. He frequently traveled out of state to watch his son and grandsons play college football, a testament to his unwavering support and love for his family. His commitment to supporting his granddaughters was equally evident as he attended their volleyball and basketball games, often finding himself at a game every night of the week. Fred also delighted in the simple joys of life, such as taking the twins to get Starbucks after school, which was a special treat for them and a testament to his caring nature. Another cherished activity was playing a game of 42 with his favorite partner "Betty JO" and his children, which brought much laughter and countless memories.
Fred's faith was the cornerstone of his life, guiding his every decision and action. He was a godly man of deep conviction and steadfast belief in God's Holy Word. His faith was not just something he professed but something he lived out every day, in his interactions with family, friends, and even strangers. Fred was known for his generous spirit; he was always willing to give of his time, resources, and love to those in need. As a long-time Sunday School teacher and Church Treasurer at his former church, Calvary Baptist Church in Mesquite, Fred was known for his wisdom, humility, and kindness. He was deeply committed to prayer, often interceding on behalf of others and providing spiritual support and comfort through his prayers.
In his leisure time, Fred was an avid golfer who found peace and joy on the green. Golf was more than just a hobby for Fred; it was a passion that reflected his competitive spirit and love of life. He also enjoyed playing the piano, which he was self-taught at an early age. Although it was rare, he would often play at Christmas, and it was such a treat for everyone.
Fred Edwards leaves behind a legacy of 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
As we mourn his passing, we find comfort in the words of 1 Thessalonians 4:13: "We do not mourn as those who have no hope." Fred's faith assures us of a future reunion and a life eternal in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus.
