Rashid As Salam, 71, passed away on November 6, 2023, in Arlington, TX. Rashid As Salam also known as Alfredo and "Chato" by his Panamanian family and friends as well as affectionately known as "Hallelujah" by his faith community. Rashid was born on May 26, 1952, in Colon, Panama to Wilfred Smith and Violet Wilson.
Rashid attended Colegio Adventista De Colon in Colon, Panama and went on to earn an associate degree in Auto Mechanic Service from Greenville Technical College in the early 1980's. He started his career as a Auto Body Repairer and Detailer and went on to establish himself as an entrepreneur and founder of Express Car Wash for many years in the Dallas Fort-Worth area.
Rashid was a member and churchgoer of New Beginnings Church in Bedford, TX. Rashid was best known for his love for the Lord, passion for body work on automobiles, fixing cars and dancing to soca and calypso music. Rashid also served in the United States Marines Corp. in which he served in the Vietnam War.
Rashid is survived by his children Felicia Smith, Senon Smith, Vicente Smith, Sr., Tariq Tauheed, stepchildren Hayward Murphy, Kalimah Davis-Tauheed, Carisse Cooper-Suraj, and former wife, mother of the smith children Nellie Smith, siblings Basilio Bute, Olivia Bute, Zelma Holmes, and Claudette Bovell, grandchildren Jatavius Smith, Essence Smith, Vicente Smith, Jr, Siyani Merriweather, Justin Shaw, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and relatives.
Special friends of mention that he is survived by is his mentee of many years Roslyn Jackson, longtime friends Carlos Cummings, Mary Volk, and many others to name only a few.
Rashid is preceded in death by his parents Violet Wilson, and Wilfred Smith, brothers Vicente Wilson and Luis Bute.
The service for Mr. Rashid As Salam will be held on Friday, December
1, 2023, at 11:00 AM at New Hope Funeral Home Chapel, Sunnyvale, TX.
Visitation: Friday, at 10:00 AM at New Hope Funeral Home Chapel, Sunnyvale, TX.
Burial: Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, Dallas, TX.
