Nicholas J. Porter, 76, resident of Mesquite, Texas, went to be with the Lord on December 29, 2016.Born in Olney, IL, to Lyle Walker Porter and Maude Eleanor (Thread) Porter Mokler, Nick was raised in the Carmi area.After graduating from Crossville High School in 1957, he joined the U. S. Navy with his best friend Bill Swingle and served on the USS Columbus.After his honorable discharge from the Navy and while studying at Olney Community College, he met and married Carol (Davis) Porter.Together, with son Mike and daughter Denise, they made their life in Missouri then Texas. Along the way, he became a franchisee for Burger King Corporation and later owned and operated several different food chains.After retirement, Nick enjoyed talking with fellow veterans and volunteering at the VA Hospital in Dallas. He is preceded in death by his parents, step-father Roy Mokler, brother Arthur Clifford Porter, and sister Linda (Porter) Womack.He is survived by his siblings Katherine Miller of Bellevue, WA; Gay Ella Knight of Carmi, IL; and brother Terry Porter of Carmi, IL; former wife Carol Porter of Dallas, TX; son Michael Porter of Plano, TX; daughter Denise (Porter) Green, and grandson Jeff Closs of Mesquite, TX.Interment will be at the National Cemetery in Arlington, Texas.In lieu of flowers, remembrance may be made to your favorite charity.May he rest in peace with our Lord Jesus Christ.
