Nettie Muriel Hood, a long-time resident of Mesquite, passed away peacefully at the age of eighty-four on Saturday the 11th of May at her home surrounded by her loving family. Born July 24, 1934 in Arp, Texas, Muriel Ferguson grew up as the oldest daughter of an Assembly of God preacher. She was raised in East Texas towns such as Van, Carlyle and finally Longview with her four brothers and sister. After graduating from Longview High School, she attended East Texas State University in Commerce graduating with a Bachelors of Education. She continued with a Masters degree in Education which eventually led her to teach English, Typing and Shorthand at Agnew Middle School and West Mesquite High School in the Mesquite Independent School District for 39 years. On August 1,1964 she married her beloved husband Hulon W. Hood, Jr. and they were married for 40 wonderful years before Hulon’s passing in 2004. Mom loved teaching, reading, crossword puzzles, traveling, going to church where she served in the nursery, and spending time with her family and friends. She was a fervent Dallas Cowboys fan and even in her eighties enjoyed keeping up with her friends on Facebook. She is survived by her son, David Hulon Hood and wife Gaylene of Mesquite, and her daughter Marsha Hood Baker and husband Alan of Mesquite. Six grandchildren, Allyson Baker Bell and husband Bryan, Jonathan Hood, Mason Baker and wife Meleah, Brandon Hood and fianc Marley Graham, Dawson Baker and wife Briana, and Harrison Baker. Her six great-grandkids were the light of her life, Graeme and Finley Baker, Malone and Sophia Hood, Hulon and Ferguson Bell, and another baby boy Baker on the way. She is also survived by three brothers, James Ferguson, Paul Ferguson and Wayne Ferguson, and one sister Jean Hassig. Muriel was preceded in death by her husband Hulon W. Hood, Jr., her parents David E. and Jewel Ferguson, and her brother Doyle Ferguson. Our mom was a precious woman of faith and a quiet soul, she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
