Miller (Wickenburg, AZ) Numerous Cousins and Friends Karen retired in 1992 after a long career with Southwestern Life Insurance Company as an underwriter. She was very active in her community, in her church, with her family, and with her three dogs. While she loved to travel and did so extensively, she also loved to be home with the dogs and cheer loudly for the Dallas Mavericks on TV. She was looking forward to their upcoming season and already had the 2014/2015 games on her calendar. She also shared a love of Oklahoma State football with her Granddaughter – Go Pokes! She enjoyed arts and crafts including knitting, ceramics, and stamping. These activities kept her happy when she wasn’t traveling the world. Additionally, she kept busy with various commitments and interests she had in the Mesquite community. For 28 years she faithfully served her community and the causes in which she felt she could make a difference. She was a member of the Mesquite Exchange Club, an Ambassador for the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce, and on the Board of Directors for Keep Mesquite Beautiful. She held many officer positions in these organizations and gave tirelessly to further their efforts. From 2006 to 2013 she gave her time to the Weez B Buds Relay for Life Mesquite team, walking for the American Cancer Society. As a breast cancer survivor, she was proud to have raised over $1000 for the cause, earning her “Green” t-shirt for several years. As a result of her active participation, she helped the team to be the top fundraiser in Mesquite. She was a devoted and involved member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mesquite. She moved closer to the Lord through her sincere commitment to many church activities and programs. Most recently she was Treasurer for the Geneva Fellowship Sunday School Class, helped with set up for Wednesday night meals, and had been a long time member of the Chancel Choir. Her spirits were lifted by the outpouring of love and support from her Church family in the last several weeks. Her greatest pride and joy was her namesake – her Granddaughter, Elaine (“Lainie”). She took great pleasure in watching her grow and was very proud of her accomplishments. They took many trips together, shared a love of High Tea at the Dallas Arboretum, card games, country music, and laughter. Most recently she loved hearing about Lainie’s travels while studying abroad and her work towards a law degree. In a letter to her daughter, Valerie, Karen wrote, “as I always remember Christi when I look at the moon, now when you look up and see the moon, just know that we are smiling down at you.” Fittingly, a “Super Moon” was in the sky when Karen left us.
