Steve Cornett of Chipita Park, Colorado, Beaumont, Texas and Burleson, Texas passed away on February 7th, 2016 after a long journey with early-onset Alzheimer’s, at the age of 64, surrounded by family. Steve was born on March 8th, 1951 in Shelbyville, Indiana to Smokey and Wilma Cornett. He graduated from Manitou Springs High School in 1969, and from Colorado State University in 1974. Steve and Melinda Moore were married in 1978 in Houston, Texas. Steve worked for M.W. Kellogg for 35 years, retiring due to his Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Steve loved the outdoors – especially fishing. It didn’t matter what kind of fish – or where – as long as he was fishing. He had every gadget one could have in his tackle box. Steve also loved sports – no team more than the Denver Broncos. He bled orange and blue. He also followed the Yankees, becoming a fan in the days of Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris in his childhood. Steve was a member North End Baptist Church in Beaumont, Texas where he attended with his family and served as a deacon, taught youth Sunday School and sang in the choir for many years. After moving to the DFW area he became a member of First Baptist Church Burleson, where he and Melinda made fast friends with many from the West Sunday School class. Steve had a witty sense of humor and was loved by everyone who knew him. In 2014, Steve moved into Three Forks of Forney Memory Care in Forney, Texas. Steve is survived by his wife of 38 years, Melinda; his sons Troy Cornett and Cody Cornett, and daughter Teresa Parsons; his daughters-in-law Sarah Cornett and Summer Cornett and son-in-law, Andrew Parsons; his grandchildren Hayden, Claire, Carson, Jack, Silas and one more due in July. Also surviving are his sisters Connie Dovenspike and Cathy Toms; his nieces Shelley Ettleman, Tina Toms and Kristin Erickson; his nephews Luke Dovenspike, Jake Dovenspike and Kenny Toms. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service will be held for Steve on March 5th, 2016 at New Hope Funeral Home in Sunnyvale, Texas (500 East Hwy. 80, Sunnyvale, TX 75182). All who knew him are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to alz.org, in Steve’s name, to help advance the fight to end Alzheimer’s.
