Joanne Cole

JoAnne James Cole, a 5th generation Texan, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was 87 years old. JoAnne was born on December 31, 1936, in the vibrant city of San Antonio, Texas. She was the beloved daughter of Alice Lessing James and Charles James and shared her childhood with her wonderful Irish twin brother, Hayward James. Growing up in San Antonio, she developed a strong work ethic and an unwavering determination that would guide her throughout her life. JoAnne proudly graduated from the very first class of the nursing school at Texas Womans University, kicking off a fulfilling career in healthcare. It was at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, while pursuing her nursing studies, that she met her future husband, Dr. James Raymond (Jim) Cole, who was then a medical student. Their love story blossomed into a beautiful marriage that lasted over 60 years, rooted in mutual respect and a shared passion for their work. JoAnne and Jim found their forever home in Gainesville, Texas, where they happily raised their four children and became active members of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Her incredible dedication and professionalism defined Joanne's nursing journey and her role in the family medical practice. Together, she and Jim worked side by side for over fifty years, making a meaningful difference in the lives of their patients and the Cooke County community. Known for her sharp mind and unyielding spirit, JoAnne faced every challenge with determination and purpose. She will be remembered for her love of turquoise jewelry, antiquing, and exploring the mountains in Leadville, Colorado. Her legacy is one of strength and commitment, reflecting her deep devotion to her work, her church, her loved ones, and the values she held dear. JoAnne is lovingly remembered by her brother, Hayward James, and her four wonderful children: Dr. Steven Cole (wife Janice), Nancy Cole Tittle (husband Ben), Michael Cole (wife Serena), and David Cole (wife Cathy). They all reside in Texas and share fond memories of their time with her. She also leaves behind eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, each carrying a piece of her spirit in their hearts. A private celebration of Joanne's life will be held at a later date, honoring the life and contributions of a remarkable woman.
