Ora “Gladys” Traylor Born October 4, 1919 Ora “Gladys” Brubaker Traylor was born in Brownwood, Texas; Brown County October 4, 1919 to William and Susan Baron Brubaker. She was the youngest of nine children – four brothers and four sisters.She out lived all the siblings and one grandson her favorite. Gladys great grandparents came from Illinois after the Civil War.There was no work in the North so they came to Texas in a covered wagon.When they got to Texas no one would hire a Northerner and were told to go back North.Almost starving to death; her great grandfather took any possible job.As soon as the children were old enough to pull cotton, work in the pecan company (cracking and peeling) and her great grandfather and older brothers went to work in granite plants and making tomb stones. Gladys found her hobby and gift from God at the age of ten.She started rolling curls with bobby pins and could set waves better than any grown shop lady.She went to Whitcha Falls at the age of fifteen and lived with her older brother and sister-in-law.She went to work in a friends beauty shop; mopping, sweeping and other cleaning jobs.The owner watched her cut and set friends hair and they told her, she needed to get her beautician license before they started the law that you had to go to beauty school.She got her licenses and started to work in that friends shop. She was paid ten cents for a shampoo and set.Sometimes she got a pie, cake, jelly or eggs.She traded services for goods many times through her young life. She met and married Jack Thomas Traylor, June 11, 1938.They had two children, Linda Jean Traylor and Jerry Douglas Traylor.She survived World War II, while her husband served in Germany and the Great Depression.She worked in a beauty shopin Brownwood, took in ironing, rented half of her home to another woman and her two children whose husband was in the Navy.Whatever it took to feed her family, plus she cared for her mother and father, her husband’s aunt, who raised him and his Granny.She also raised a large garden and shared it with anyone in need. After her husband passed on April 15, 1990, she continued to live in Brownwood and run her own shop until August 2002.She decided to come live in Terrell.She was a member of Coggin Ave. Baptist Church in Brownwood all of her life there.When she moved to Terrell she joined Sunnyvale First Baptist Church. On June 29, 2011 when her health started to decline she moved to Country View Manor for her residents.She was happy and well taken care of there.Her family is especially proud of the nurses, aides and staff for their love and care to her.Ms. Traylor has two children, a daughter Linda Jean Traylor Chism and a son Jerry Douglas Traylor.She has five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and one great great grand son. She turned 95 years of age on October 4, 2014.She has lead a wonderful life and she has traveled all over the world.She tells everyone how blessed she has lived and how good the Lord has been to her all her life. Ora “Gladys” Brubaker Traylor Our dear mother went home to be with OUR Lord and Savior with her family being at her bedside on July 12, 2015.Ora “Gladys” Brubaker Traylor, age 95 of Brownwood, Texas.Family will receive friends at New Hope Funeral Home, Sunnyvale, TX on Tuesday, July 14th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm.Ms. Traylor was born on October 4, 1919 to the late William and Susan Baron Brubaker. Graveside services will be Saturday, July 18, 2015 at 3:00pm, Eastlawn Cemetery Early, Texas.Officiating at the service will be Dr. Charles Wilson. Dennis Goodner, director of music at Central Baptist Crandall will sing “I’d Rather Have Jesus” and “How Great Thou Art.” Gladys lived in Brownwood all her life until August of 2002, when she decided to move to Terrell, Texas to be closer to her daughter.Ms. Traylor was a cosmetologist from the age 15 until she retired in July of 2002.She loved her work.She owned her own beauty salon at 1900 Southside Drive and Avenue K.She has many wonderful friends. She was a member of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church until she moved to Terrell, where she joined Sunnyvale First Baptist Church. Gladys was a wonderful, kind and loving wife and mother; as well as a dear friend.She would do anything she could to help someone.Her daughter remembers many times that her mother would give a permanent or hair set to anyone who couldn’t afford it.She even was known for trading services for goods to help people. On June 11, 1938, she married Jack Thomas Traylor, who preceded her in death on April 15, 1990. Survivors include:A daughter, Linda Jean Traylor Chism and her husband Odell of Terrell, Texas.Their daughter, Cheryl Charissee Chism Cotton and her husband Tom and their two daughters, Payton Charissee and her husband Todd of Longview, Texas.Kelsie Lea and her husband of Jacob of Hallsville, Texas.Christopher Shane Chism and his wife, Sarah Ann and her great, great, grandson Logan Montgomery, her great great daughter due on October 3rd of Plano, Texas. A son, Jerry Douglas Traylor and his wife Betty of Bangs, Texas, two sons, Roy Glenn Traylor of Bangs, Texas and Jim Traylor and his wife Elisa.Their daughter, Brittany and a son Brandon of Krueger, Texas.One daughter, Michelle Charisse Traylor and her daughter McKenna Charisse of Carrollton, Texas.She is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her favorite grandson, Fredric Odell Chism, II, brothers; Jimmy Brubaker, Homer Brubaker, Tommy Brubaker, Herman Brubaker, and sisters, Lucille Brubaker, Viola Eager, Irene Day and Gertrude “Trudy” Whisenant, step-son, Jack George Traylor and many who loved her. The family wishes to thank all of the nurses and aides at Country View Manor in Terrell, Texas and Cornerstone Hospice for all their loving care of our mother for 5 years. She is dearly loved and will be greatly missed and God received her with open arms and said, “Welcome my good and faithful servant.”
