Deputy Chief George H. Reed 31-year veteran of Dallas Police Department George Hoyt Reed was born on February 28, 1931.He was a small town boy from Lewisville, Texas.Hoyt was forced to grow up fast when his mother died when he was 12 years old.He married Jane Wills of Denton, Texas when both were teenagers.They were married for over 50 years and raised four children. As a young man in Lewisville, Hoyt worked hard to support his family.He drove a bread truck, repaired power lines and worked as an auto mechanic.In 1954 he joined the Dallas Police Department.Hoyt was a dedicated police officer with potential that gained notice.He was promoted to Sergeant in 1959 and thereafter began a rise through the highest ranks of the department.During his career he was a Detective, Director of Intelligence, Commander of the Northwest Station and appointed Deputy Chief in 1973.He helped coordinate security for the Beatles in the 1960?s, met a U. S. President, stood guard over the body of a presidential assassin and was a part of history as he performed his duties on November 22, 1963.Chief Reed retired in 1986 with 31 years of service. In addition to performing his responsibilities at the Police Department, Hoyt was devoted to his family.He sold snow cones to raise money for band uniforms, was a fixture at ballgames, wrestling tournaments and scout meetings and was an active member of the church. During retirement Hoyt learned to square dance.He and Jane participated in square dance events both locally and around the country.He enjoyed watching his grandson play baseball, telling cop stories with other retied officers and was fortunate to travel extensively throughout the world with his wife and relatives. Hoyt is survived by his wife and 4 children, Oleta, Mike, Pat & Tim.He has 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.He was a good man who overcame a difficult childhood to achieve success in both his professional and family life.He will be greatly missed.
