MCCOY, George Lee of Mesquite, born October 14, 1924, passed away April 15, 2004. Preceded in death by father, Kid McCoy, mother, Rose McCoy, brother, Sonny McCoy, son, Terry McCoy. Survived by wife, Betty McCoy; daughter, Yvonne McCoy; step-daughter, Sharon Cato & husband, Kim; step-son, Wes Burchett & wife, Debbie; step-son, Randy Burchett & wife, Lori; step-daughter, Donna Fisher; step-daughter, Denice Andres & husband, Steve; step-son, David Burchett; 2 grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren. George was a professional musician who wrote and performed Country, Hawaiian, and Gospel music. He also recorded with several well known artists.He was best known for his steel guitar & lead guitar.George played at the Longhorn Ballroom for 14 years and was a staff musician on the Big D Jamboree.He served in the Army Airforce in World War II and Korea.He was an avid model train collector. Services will be Monday, April 19, at 11:00 A.M. at the New Hope Funeral Home Chapel with Joe Price, Dan Stevens & Frank Denton officiating. Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, April 18 at the funeral home. Interment will be in the DFW National Cemetery. Special Highlights and Achievement's in George's Life: George & Betty met on May 25, 1983 and flourished as one for twenty one years. Served in the military while stationed in Panama in World War II. While in the Reserves, was called back for the Korean Theater Entertained the guys at the Barracks with his guitar and singing After being honorably discharged, he entered his music career as a Musician (He started learning to play steel guitar at age 12) Traveled across country with the Hart Brothers (a gospel group) Traveled with Ira Stanphill ( a gospel group) George then went into Professional Country Music Musician & Songwriter of: Hawaiian, Gospel and Country Western music Played Steel on early Ray Price recordings Performed as Staff Musician on Big D Jamboree Performed at Dewey Grooms Longhorn Ballroom for 14 years Performed at VFW and American Legion and many other establishments Donated his time by performing at Churches, Nursing Homes, Charity Functions George's hobby was collecting model railroad trains.His father was an engineer and took George on rides in his early childhood George at one time was offered a recording contract with RCA and he turned it down, being ever humble, he said He wasn't good enough for that.
