Evelyn Cheek

March 20, 1960 — February 6, 2025

Evelyn Kay Cheek, age 64 of Plano, Texas, passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2025. She was born on March 20, 1960 in Dallas, Texas to Doris Marie Waterman and W. C. "Buddy" Staton.

Evelyn was a Christian and knew that she would be with Jesus when God called her home. She made friends with everyone she met and brought joy to all in her path, dancing through life and making the most of every moment. She was a retired school teacher and a mentor to many. She took pride in ensuring that each of her students felt loved and cared for, and she was an expert at making each topic engaging and fun.

After she retired, Evelyn led many tours with Teaching in Action, bussing hundreds of fourth graders from Dallas to Austin to tour the Texas State Capitol and the Texas History Museum, maintaining excitement the entire day, even with Texas Bingo on the bus ride home. Evelyn loved traveling to new places and booked as many quilting retreats as possible. She joined multiple quilt guilds and spent much of her free time in front of her sewing machine creating beautiful quilted masterpieces. She also loved to crochet. Many of her crochet projects involved making hats for the homeless, which she would donate to be distributed to the homeless community in Dallas. She loved the State Fair of Texas, Christmas, all-things Texas History, reading, and being Mama Meineke at her two shops in Richardson and McKinney. She was a loving wife, amazing mom, and fierce friend.

She is survived by her husband Douglas and her daughters, Jennifer and Jordan, as well as her sisters Nancy Gail Blair of Pecan Hill, Texas, Valle Arden Gregory of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Neva Prettyman of Mesquite, Texas, in addition to many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death was her father, mother, and sisters, Deborah Ann Monus and Margaret Lynn Staton.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2025 at Community Life Church in Sunnyvale, Texas (610 US-80, Sunnyvale, TX, 75182), officiated by Rev. Randy Wade. The family will receive friends and family after the service concludes.
