Dorothy Morgan

December 31, 1930 — April 28, 2016

Dorothy Ray (Smith) Morgan of Forney passed away on April 28, 2016 at the age of 85 following a short illness. Mrs. Dorothy Morgan was born on December 31, 1930 to Edgar Clifford Smith and Nell Allene (Kincaid) Smith in Forney. She lived almost her entire life in and around Forney with the exception of only a few years early in her marriage. During her lifetime she served in many, varied roles that typify a successful woman’s life over the past century—as a successful student, as a compassionate caregiver to her ailing mother and father, as a loving and faithful wife and mother, as an office/clerical worker, as a committed Christian, and as one fantastic grandmother. Moments from her life that exhibit how she fulfilled these roles include:In 1937 during first grade, she was selected by her class to pen a poem to be placed in the cornerstone time capsule for the old Forney High on Bois d’ Arc Street. By her high school years, she became an editor of the Jackrabbit yearbook, a member of the pep squad, and was class president and valedictorian of the Forney High School Class of 1948.In lieu of opting for college, she stayed home to care for her dying mother and later attended secretarial school. She worked off and on for over 20 years in the offices of Southland Athletic Manufacturing in Terrell where she also edited the company’s annual product sales catalog. In 1959 she married Calvin Morgan and remained married to him for 46 years until he passed away in 2005. During that time, she provided consistent care and support to her husband and family on a daily basis in both church ministry and public/private education settings. She taught classes, led children’s groups, and headed the Woman’s Missionary Union group at her church at various times. For the past decade, she’s concentrated on her hobbies of reading, scrapbooking, and watching the Dallas Stars.Until her most recent illness, she remained active and about in the community, serving her church, and visiting regularly with her friends and relatives. She is survived by her son, Curt, daughter-in-law, Shelly, and six grandchildren: Daniel, Thomas, Sarah, James, and Jenny Morgan of College Station and Katie Morgan of Irving. She has an abundance of friends, numerous nieces and nephews, and many cousins throughout the Forney community with whom she’s maintained lifelong friendships. Her smarts, quick wit, and humor will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, May 2, 2016 at the First Baptist Church of Forney.Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Forney, TX.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Higher Ground Building Fund of First Baptist Church of Forney.
