Dorothea Pauline Zink

Dorothea Pauline Carroll Zink passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2013. Dorothea was born September 21, 1916, in Winona, Minnesota, to Farley Ray and Bertha Mae Shaw Carroll. Dorothea graduated from Winona High School in 1934, and worked in Winona Mills as a sweater maker. Determined to get an education, Dorothea traveled to Northern Nazarene College in Idaho, occasionally hitchhiking and sleeping in the sagebrush to make the trip to and from home. Dorothea graduated in 1941 with sociology and education degrees.She was salutatorian of her graduating class and then taught English at New Meadows High School in Idaho andalso enjoyed teaching Shakespeare to the local lumberjacks. While in college, she met Charles E. Zink of La Grande, Oregon, and they were married June 19, 1942. They returned to Minn. where Charles was a pastor and a principal. Dorothea taught in Gonvick, Minn, and they had their first son, Charles E., Jr. In 1946, the family moved to Menomonie, Wis., where Charles pastored First Church of the Nazarene and their second son, David, was born. In 1950, the family moved to Madison, Wis., where Charles pastored First Church of the Nazarene and their third son, Daniel, was born. Dorothea worked at Gisholt Machine Company and later at Madison Business College teaching typing. On February 10, 1958, Charles died suddenly while in a Hebrew Class at the University of Wisconsin. In 1961, Charles, Jr. left for college in Iowa, and Dorothea moved the rest of the family to Quincy, Mass., to be secretary to the President of Eastern Nazarene College where she worked for 10 years. For the next 10 years, she was administrative assistant at Sherrill House, an assisted living facility in Boston. In 1981, she retired and returned to Winona, Minn., to care for her mother, Bertha, who passed away in 1989. Dorothea was active at First Church of the Nazarene, and she met regularly with fellow high school graduates. She moved to Mesquite, Texas, in 2006 to live with her son and daughter-in-law. While in Texas, Dorothea enjoyed sharing in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Dorothea was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her son, Charles, Jr.; her daughter-in-law, Sally Kauffman Zink; her great grandson, Desmond Kirchner; siblings Lillian, Ruth, William, Robert, Eugene, Richard, and Lynn. She is survived by her children David (Donna) Zink of Mesquite, Texas, and Daniel (Carolanne) Zink of Saint Charles, Mo.; her grandchildren Chad E. (Treasa) Zink of Hudson, New Hampshire, Wendi (Sheldon) Zink-Jones of Bourbonnais, Ill., and Corey (Amanda) Zink of Bourbonnais, Ill; Matt (Laurie) Zink of Austin, Texas, Laura (Benjy) Wood of Plano, Texas, Emily (Matt) Kirchner of Chicago, Ill, and April (Les) Sellers of Arkadelphia, Ark.; and Laurianne Zink of Chesterfield, Mo., and Bethanne (Jason) Crigler of Charleston, Virginia; her great grandchildren AJ and Kloey Zink, Davis and Raegan Jones, Carson and Madeline Zink; Jordyn, Penelope, and Carson Zink, Ethan, Sarah, and Eyob Wood, Eli and Annie Kirchner, and Nehemiah and Jude Sellers; her siblings Belle (Larry) Goroski of Mount Vernon, Wash., Roger (Marie) of New Orleans, La., and Lance (Pat) of Alma, Wis.; and her beloved nieces and nephews. At the last Bible study Dorothea attended, she was asked What does Easter mean to you? She answered, It gives me hope that I will see my loved ones who have gone to be with the Lord before me. Her life was lived with this in mind: to be with the Lord forever and to help others to do the same. Well done, Dorothea. Well done.
