Charles Leroy Erwin was born March 24, 1941 in Batavia, Arkansas to Roy & Ella Frances Erwin. At 6 months of age, they moved to Oklahoma City where he lived and schooled until the 9th grade. His family moved to Dallas,Texas. Here, Charles graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, class of 1959. In 1961 he enlisted in the United States Air Force, he attended TCU night classes while stationed at the Carswell Air Force Base in Ft. Worth, and finished his honorable tour of duty in 1965. Shortly after, Charles went to work for Bell & Howell. In 1969 he started his 40+ year sales career in home improvement. Charles enjoyed many successes throughout the remainder of his life in this field. One of Charles' earliest jobs, employed as a paper boy, should not be overlooked. It was in 1956, at the age of 15, on his paper route that he met Suzanne Temple, age 12. The romance began, and continued as high school sweethearts, and they married November 9, 1961. Charles and Suzy lived many places through the years together: Biloxi, Mississippi during the earliest Air Force days, Danville, California, and Charlotte, North Carolina as jobs drew them, and several homes around the Dallas area. While Dallas was always considered home to them, Charles said his real home was wherever Suzy was. He shared 56 years and 9 months married to the love of his life. They were blessed with 5 children, 13 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Charles enjoyed sports and spent many happy days playing tennis, softball, and golf, or bowling. He had a love for watching old westerns on television, and enjoyed each season of Dancing With the Stars. Charles had an eclectic taste in music (sometimes to the chagrin of Suzy) which he both listened to and sang. He enjoyed reading Max Lucado books and Golf Digest. Charles was always an active part of his church family. After 89 days in the ICU following a heart attack, Charles died August 8, 2018 at 9:50 p.m., at Baylor Hospital in Dallas after suffering a stroke in the brain stem. He was surrounded by 22 loved ones as he peacefully died. You have truly exemplified Proverbs 17:17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.
