Barbara Jean Thompson age 87, of Mesquite, TX, passed away April 12, 2020 in Kemp, TX. She was born October 18, 1932 in Mabank, TX to William Cheek and Barbara Black Cheek. Barbara attended Mabank schools all her life and graduated from Mabank High School in 1949. Barbara married Joe Ervin Thompson on December 2, 1950 in Mabank. She was an accomplished homemaker and housewife who enjoyed cooking, sewing, quilting, traveling (especially to Colorado!) and, most of all, raising and nurturing her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren as well as to many other children to whom she was "Nana". She was a lifelong member of the Baptist church where she taught Sunday School for five-year-old children for many years, played the piano for services, and volunteered for numerous Vacation Bible Schools. She was a proud member of the "Red Hat Club" and enjoyed getting together with "The Gang", a large and joy-filled group of her church friends. Her greatest achievements in life were marrying the love of her life and remaining faithfully at his side for 63 years, raising four daughters, two grandchildren, one great grandchild and multiple others in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, and, above all, believing into the Lord Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and serving Him in every aspect of her life. She was selfless, altruistic, and always willing to sacrifice herself for the good and needs of her family. She was a superb mother and the very best of grandmothers remembered as being wise, fun, and always kind, loving, and supportive. Preceding her in death were her husband of 63 years, Joe Ervin Thompson; daughter, Tanya Thompson Delgado and grandson, Joshua Metcalf. Barbara is survived by daughter, Jo Jeannine Holland and husband, Robert; Melanie Marie Wisdom and husband, Michael; and daughter Ramona Rachelle Rogers; all of Texas; granddaughter Sarah Holland; grandson Phillip Rogers; grandson Justin Holland; granddaughter Jennifer Wisdom and husband Jose Cortez; granddaughter Heather Delgado; and grandson Christopher Delgado; great-granddaughter Savannah Rogers; great-grandson Kaden Liles; and great-grandsons Angel and Antonio Cortez; two great-great grandchildren, Ava Rogers and Elijah Venegas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at Elm Grove Cemetery, CR 2708 in Mabank.
