Alma Jewel PoteetMathis, age 95, ended her earthly journey on Sunday, September 11, 2016 with her son and daughter-in law at her bedside.Alma was born June 8, 1921 in Hill County, Texas to John Lee and Goldie Bell (Curry) Poteet.She was a dedicated Christian, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Alma had a passion for cooking and especially baking.She was always eager to bake a homemade cake or pie for family gatherings, church events and friends.She used her cooking skills and passion to faithfully cook and serve children at Southgate Elementary School in Garland ISD for 45 years where she retired at the young age of 85. A strong Christian woman of the Assembly of God faith, she attended Southside Assembly of God in Garland for 37 years.At the time of her death she was a member of Dallas First Assembly of God where she had been a member since 1996.The forever optimist, she was quick to quote you her favorite scripture, Romans 8:28:“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose”. Alma was proceeded in death by her faithful husband of 57 years, Roy Lorn Mathis.She was also preceded in death by her parents, infant brother Benny Poteet, brother Leon Poteet, sisters Edna Williams, Ruby Ripley and Frances Holland.She is survived by one son, Gaylan Mathis and wife, Karen of Forney, two grandsons, Christopher Mathis of Forney, Loren Mathis and wife Tanya of Rowlett, four great-grandchildren, Makalya Mathis, Makenzie Mathis, Callie Mathis and Callen Mathis.She is also survived by one sister, Marie Lloyd and husband, Newman of Hillsboro and many nieces, nephews and friends. The family would like to thank the staff of Springfield Senior Living, Garland TX, for taking care of Mom with grace, dignity and loving care for the past four years.
